While the original Clean Bandit track is an insanely upbeat melding of synth lines, violin runs, piano chords, and drum loops, the 1975 has somehow stripped the song to its bare bones. By slowing down the tempo, employing sparse instrumentation, and including smooth sax, they’ve transformed a club anthem into a soulful profession of love. The listener is finally able to focus on the lyrics, which seem much more heartfelt when frontman, Matt Healy, is crooning them with his dreamy British accent. Additionally, the samples of his voice sporadically crying out in the beat provides a sense of desperation and pain, which definitely colors the words with a different meaning. The best part? They’ve used the chorus of Wicked Games by The Weeknd as the bridge of this cover, adding even more elements of passion and promiscuity to the originally very poppy track.
